[Journal], 1814-1815.

Holograph journal of a voyage from England to Malta on the H.M.S. Queen, kept by the daughter of Rear Admiral Charles Vinicombe Penrose, who was journeying to Palermo to take up his appointment as commander of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean. Penrose describes life on shipboard, and her excitement at such events as her first dinner on board, a gale off the coast of Portugal, and her first glimpse of the straits of Gibraltar. She frequently alludes to her reading of Byron, particularly "The Corsair", in her responses to views and scenery. Other topics include the party's sojourn at Palermo and social and sightseeing excursions there; receiving "the news of Bonaparte's escape from Elba" while touring the ruins at Messina; and her mixed impressions of life on Malta, where she enjoyed the fireworks displays at festivals but disliked the "grotesque dancing" at the ballet.
